Gender dysphoria is not a psychiatric illness, it is a condition and is more a statement of your personal feelings of self and who you intrinsically feel is your true self! In the UK diagnosis is required for documentation and legal reasons, ie for a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), or if your are thinking of gender affirming surgery. A GRC is required in the UK to have the gender marker changed on birth certificates and on tax/pension records.
Why would you get official diagnosis of gender dysphoria and why bother with GRC?
As you trasnsition, for privacy reasons you may wish to reduce the footprint of your birth gender, to get married or just to make documentation and medical treatment more in keeping with your gender presentation, it is an important step that should be considered.
For most types of gender affirming surgery hospitals and surgeons require that you have two independent assesments, by qualified and experienced psychiatrist or gender specialist, that confirm gender dysphoria and agree that surgery is the correct and safest option in alieviating gender dysphoric symptoms and enhancing/affirming the patients gender and life.
