Counselling

Counselling with experienced Gender specialists, with lived experience and work experience  for transgender people and family/friends.

There are times in our life where we feel the need to express our feelings, to work through problems and emotional junctions/decisions .
This is often a difficult thing to do as others, especially family and friends may not understand or accept the way you feel. You need a safe accepting and affirming experience when you take that step, or if you are a parent or guardian, or even a friend, you may find chatting to our councellor helpful  in understanding the transgender experience physically and emotionally.
  As a transgender support service, we are fully aware of the difficulties of transition and the things that can impact you and your family on your journey.
    Our sessions are a way of you having  a safe space, with support, to talk through not just the negative or worrying aspects, but also the positive things in your life.
   We can offer advice and help you develop coping strategies to help you navigate the world and make things positive.

 Therapy provides a safe and confidential space for you to talk about your issues and concerns. The therapist will help you explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, so you can develop a better understanding of yourself and of others.. A counsellor will not give you a diagnosis or prescribe medication. They will help you find your own solutions – whether that’s making effective changes in your life, or finding ways of coping with your problems.
How often you see your therapist and how many appointments you have will depend on your individual circumstances, and will be agreed between you and your therapist.
During a session, your therapist may take you through specific exercises, designed to help with your problem, or you might have more general discussions about how you're feeling. What you talk about will vary depend on what you want help with, it could include;
  • navigating your relationships relating to transition, as a trans person or as a relative or friend.
  • exploring your childhood.
  • exploring your feelings, emotions and thoughts. this is important if you're taking cross sex hormones.
  • your behaviour and reasons why you are the way you are.
  • past and present life events, previous traumatic experiences.
  • situations you find difficult, ie, transitioning in school or the work place.
  • Approaching gender affirmative surgery, or post operative emotions and thoughts and results.
Your therapist will be impartial but understanding. They will listen to you without judgment and help you explore your thoughts and emotions. They may offer information, but they won’t tell you what you should think or do.
 Confidentiality is paramount to the counsellor and client relationship, please be aware if you disclose that you will or have harmed yourself or others, that the councellor may have to inform other professionals, you will be informed of this at the time.  We have a duty of care towards our clients but have to also consider the risks to others.
